Poruks, Jānis

Poet and writer Jānis Poruks was born in the Druviena Parish in 1871 and studied at the Riga Polytechnic Institute and at the Dresden Royal Conservatory. After returning to Latvia, he worked for the newspaper Mājas Viesis and the magazine Mājas Viesa Mēnešraksts. He published several novels, short stories and collections of poetry during the years 1888 and 1906.
After 1905, Poruks’s creative activity dried up, and he was repeatedly hospitalized in psychiatric clinics. Poruks died suddenly in a clinic in Tartu in 1911.
